BARDNEY ABBEY REVEALED 2011

Throughout the summer of 2011, a project to re-excavate and conserve part of Bardney Abbey Refectory, (see image) organised by Jews Court Trust, in partnership with Bardney Heritage Group and Bardney Heritage Centre is being organised. It is funded mainly by the Heritage Lottery Fund, with additional support from BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

This new free Medieval Learning Pack has just been released and is available to download NOW.

This exciting resource, designed by Kathy Holland (an authority in Medieval Lifestyle), will enable you to learn more about Bardney Abbey and the daily lives of the monks. Explore the Refectory and view some of the wonderful artefacts collected from the 2012 dig. Enjoy the puzzles and activities.

Site excavation will commence on 14th June 2011, by Archaeological Professional Services (APS) of Sleaford and is expected to last for approximately 16 days. (see Work Schedule below)

56 volunteers have been formally trained to assist with the project. The training included Health & Safety (risk assessment), local Bardney history and basic archaeology.

Excavations will commence at 09:00hrs until 15:50hrs on each day of the schedule (based on a 4 days on /4 days off work pattern).

Open Days are scheduled on the following dates:

  • 19th June
  • 3rd July
  • 14th August
  • 11th September (See Events Diary below)

Numerous demonstrations will be held throughout each day between 10:00hrs and 16:00hrs.

After a meeting with representative from English Heritage, on 3rd July, it was agreed that the monument was in a poor state of preservation and the only alternative was to back-fill it.
