Diffusion

After leaving the Slicers the cossettes are pre-heated and fed into the R.T. Diffuser. (Imagine a large teapot with tea leaves in it. This is the same principle). The diffuser works on a counter-flow basis and is similar to a scroll inside. It has 58 compartments, in which the cossettes are transported through.

Inside the diffuser it is important that the conditions are right. The main elements are temperature, pH and retention time. The correct balance of these three operating parameters is imperative to allow the maximum extraction of the sucrose molecules and still maintain a well-structured cossette for pressing into pulp for Animal Feed Shreds.

The R.T. Diffuser is 37 metres (122 feet) long and over 6.75 metres (22 feet) in diameter. The sidewalls are 25mm (one inch) thick at the centre. While processing to capacity, it weighs over 1000 tonnes. It rotates at about 25 revolutions every hour taking roughly 90 minutes for the cossettes to travel through the drum.

The spent Cossettes are then pressed, to remove as much liquid as possible, before continuing to the Animal Feed Driers.
