Thursday 28th January 2021 - John Spires & Jackie Oates

John Spires

The internationally famous tunesmith John Spires joins us again. He first appeared with Jon Bowden in about 2003 (we did not have a good diary back then) when we were a free entry club playing in the Horseshoe, Thurlby. They then came to the Barn in 2005 and 2007.

John Spiers, better known in folk circles as Squeezy, is one of the leading melodeon players of his generation.  Well known for his partnership with Jon Boden as well as being a member of Bellowhead, the most successful folk band in recent history.  John was also a member of Eliza Carthy’s band, featuring on her 2002 Mercury nominated album, Anglicana.

Mixing infectious dance tunes with incredibly sensitive and moving slow airs on a mind-boggling range of different squeezeboxes, John’s solo shows are a mixture of traditional material and his own more intricate compositions.

A true enthusiast, his passion for music and bellows-driven instruments is only equalled by his passion for his allotment, cooking, making things out of wood, home brewing, the environment, gadgets and complaining about things on Twitter.

Jackie Oates

A finalist in BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2003. For four years, she was

a member of Rachel Unthank And The Winterset and won the award in 2009. She performs as a soloist and as a member groups such as Wistman’s Wood, Morris Offspring, The Imagined Village.

Jackie sings, and plays violin, viola and the Indian bellows drive drone originally heard in many pieces of Indian music but now heard in other spheres.
